What are the signs I have blocked drains?

There are a few things you can look out for, which may be able to indicate you have a blockage issue in your drains system. Some of the most common signs of a blocked drain include; inconsistencies in your water levels in your toilet, water draining away a lot slower than usual in your sink or when you flush your toilet, and of course, foul smelling odours being produced.

Who is responsible for an external drain blockage?

In general, the homeowner is responsible for unblocking any drains within your property boundary such as, beneath your house, garden, and driveway. These are classed as private drains. Any drains which do not share pipes with your neighbours are your responsibility to unblock.

More information can be found on Thames Water (London Water Company) & Citizens Advice.

Why am I experiencing blockages in my drains?

Blocked drains usually occur due to a range of items entering your drain systems by being flushed down the toilet, or poured into your kitchen sink. Some of these items may include; large quantities of toilet paper, un-biodegradable wipes/nappies/sanitary towels, hair in the shower, or grease, fat and food debris in the kitchen. Some of these items will end up combining to create a blockage as well.

Other reasons your drains are blocked can include more severe problems such as structural defects, broken or collapsed pipes. In which case, a survey may be recommended.

Our drainage experts are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide fast, efficient, and affordable unblocking services. Contact us to request a free quote.

Can I prevent further blockages?

Being mindful of what gets flushed into your drains, is by far, the most effective way of preventing further blockages in your drains. Here's some quick and easy tips you can take away in order to help keep your pipes flowing.

  • Ensure you do not flush un-biodegradable items such as nappies, sanitary towels, and wet wipes down the toilet.
  • Endeavour to keep fat or grease to pour down the drain whilst you are washing up in the kitchen. Try to recycle and reuse as much as posible, but when you need to dispose of cooking oil and fat, try pouring used cooking oil into a unrecyclable container & throw away with the reest of your general bin waste.
  • Try to remove fallen hair from around your shower plug hole after showering.
  •  If you are experiencing recurring blockages, or you live in an older property which is more succeptable to persistent issues, we would recommend a CCTV Drain Survey. A survey will provide you with the information and analysis you need to discover, assess and fix any blockages that cannot be rectified with a simple unblock.

What is a CCTV Drain Survey?

Simply put, a CCTV drain survey is a detailed look into your drainage system, using specialist drain survey equipment. The drain camera is fed into your drainage system, which then feeds back CCTV footage back to a monitor at surface level, so a drainage engineer can fully assess the state of your drains. This recording is the documented and saved, so that any findings are confirmed and recommendations can be made accordingly.
